How an adolescent overcame his addiction to prescription drugs.

"It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." Tale of Two cities by Charles Dickens and that is just how I felt when I got caught using drugs. My mother died of complications from diabetes and kidney failure in the early spring of 2007. Six months later our house caught on fire and resulted in us moving in with relatives in an "adult community" ( no kids and I should have not been there) until we got the insurance check and could start repairs on the house. My dad was sick with COPD and PTSD and some other things and had been out of work for 2 years and was trying to get disability from the VA so money was very low and stress was very high. In English that fall I read a book about a boy who took Xanax to get through a schools day. There it was. My solution. At any given time my aunt had a bunch of these and I found it was amazing what this little orange pill could do for me. I was sleeping right, getting to school on time and my grades went from F's to A's and B's. Someone found my stash under my bed and my dad Marchman Acted me in to treatment at DACCO. The counselors helped me admit to my self the four things I was sure of; I was stealing money. I was stealing drugs. I was hurting loved ones and the fun or relief was not worth all the negatives. I was referred for evaluation of my ADD and anxiety to their medication clinic and with legally prescribed medications and help in groups and from my individual counselor I learned how to manage my stress, communicate my concerns instead of keeping them bottled up inside me. I just turned 17years old and was asked to write my story as part of graduation process from DACCO's Adolescent program in Brandon. I am very thankful for my dad taking action to help me, and for the skills of the counselors at DACCO. I now have hope about my future and that I will survive to have one.
