“A High Can Only Go So Far”

Andrew:  Marijuana’s not really a bad thing.  I started using in high school to ‘mellow out’, ‘chill’, not think about problems.
I didn’t use all the time mostly on weekend with friends.  I knew legally it was wrong but for me it was not a big deal.
Then my mom found some in my room.

Maggie:  I was really scared, afraid of what this would mean for my son, my family.  I thought, “Andrew has so much to offer,
why would he make such a bad choice?  I feared the impact of drugs on my son.  I wondered what else this might lead to.”
It destroyed the trust between us.

Andrew:  The worst of it was when I got arrested.  I was sitting in a parked car outside a friend’s house smoking with another
friend.  Neither of us saw the officer until he tapped on the glass.  “It was heart stopping, I was frozen.  I couldn’t believe
I was being arrested.  Worst of all I lost my license!”  Since I’ve been here [DACCO] “I’ve come to realize a high can only go
so far, it’s a short term fix.  It’s not worth it, the cons out weigh the pros.”

Maggie:  I’m so proud of Andrew.  He’s planning for his future.  He’s enrolled in college and his conversations have also matured.
“The C.A.R.T. program has been wonderful.”  It’s even helped me to realize some things about myself.  “It’s good to know you’re
not alone, and best of all we’re not fighting.”
